Assignments
IGNOU assignment front page format
The cover sheet is how your study centre matches a bundle of handwritten pages to your enrolment number. Get one field wrong and the marks can land on someone else’s grade card.

What goes on the front page

IGNOU does not publish one compulsory design. What it does require is a specific set of identifying details on the first sheet of every assignment. The June 2025 submission guidelines from Regional Centre Delhi-1.pdf) put it plainly: the first page of each assignment must carry the name of the learner, enrolment number, study centre code, course code, mobile number and email ID — followed by the ID card, question paper, and then your answers.
Most study centres also expect the programme code, assignment code, session, submission date, and your signature. The table below is the superset that will be accepted anywhere.
| Field | What to write | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Your full name exactly as it appears in IGNOU records | ID card |
| Enrolment number | The 9 or 10 digit number, not your registration number | ID card or grade card |
| Programme code | For example BAG, BCOMG, MEG, MCA_NEW | Admission confirmation |
| Course code | For example BEGLA-136, MMPC-001 | Assignment question paper |
| Assignment code | For example BEGLA-136/TMA/2026, if printed | Assignment question paper |
| Study centre code | The numeric code of your allotted centre | ID card or admission letter |
| Study centre name | Full name of the learner support centre | ID card |
| Regional centre | Only if your centre asks for it | Admission letter |
| Session | January 2026 or July 2026 | Question paper cover |
| Mobile number | A number you actually answer | — |
| Email ID | The address registered with IGNOU | — |
| Date of submission | The real date you hand it in or upload it | — |
| Signature | Signed by hand, not typed | — |
Why the enrolment number matters most
Your assignment marks are uploaded against your enrolment number, not your name. If that number is wrong or unreadable, the marks either go to another learner or sit unmatched until you chase them. This is the single most common reason a grade card shows a course as Not Completed months after you submitted.
- Copy it digit by digit from your ID card, then read it back once.
- Do not use your application number or the control number from your registration slip.
- Write it clearly enough that a stranger could transcribe it — this is the number a data entry operator has to key in.
Skip the handwriting
Fill the fields once and download a clean, correctly laid out A4 cover page as a PDF.
Open the front page generatorGetting the session right
IGNOU runs two admission cycles, and the session on your cover page tells the evaluator which cycle your answers belong to. Write it as a month and a year.
- January session
- Admitted in the January cycle. Written as
January 2026. - July session
- Admitted in the July cycle. Written as
July 2026.
The session on your cover page should match the session printed on the question paper you answered. Downloading last year’s question paper and writing this year’s session on the cover is a mismatch the evaluator will notice.
Online and offline submission differ
The cover page is required either way, but what surrounds it changes.
Step 1: Offline, at your allotted study centre
Hand in the assignment as a separate file or folder per course. Ask for a receipt and get it stamped or signed. Keep a photocopy of everything you submit — the receipt is your only proof if the status never updates.
Step 2: Online, through your regional centre
Scan the pages in order: cover page first, then ID card, then the question paper, then your answers. Produce one single PDF per course. Regional Centre Delhi-1 caps each file at 10 MB and explicitly warns against splitting one assignment into several PDFs.
The rules for the pages behind the cover
A perfect front page will not save an assignment that breaks the writing rules. IGNOU treats assignments as a Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA), and they carry 30% of your final course marks, with the term-end exam carrying the other 70%.
- Paper
- A4, ruled or plain
- Ink
- Blue or black ball pen only
- Handwriting
- Your own hand, in your own words. Typed answers are not accepted unless your programme has authorised it in writing.
- Left margin
- Roughly 4 cm, so the evaluator has room to comment
- Submission
- Once, at your allotted study centre only
Mistakes that cost students marks
- Last year’s assignment code. Codes change with the session. Take it from the question paper you actually downloaded this cycle.
- A missing signature. Unsigned cover pages get bounced at the counter, and you lose a trip.
- Submitting at a convenient centre instead of the allotted one. This creates duplicate records and delays grading.
- Several PDFs for one course. Online submissions must be one file per course.
- No receipt. Without a stamped receipt you have no way to prove a submission that never appeared in the system.
After you submit
Assignment marks generally appear on the grade card around 30 to 45 days after submission. If a course still reads Not Completed well past that window, check the enrolment number and course code you wrote on the cover page first — a transcription error there is the usual cause. Then take your stamped receipt to the study centre coordinator.
