IGNOU assignment submission rules

Handwritten, A4, one file per course, at your allotted centre — and a receipt you can actually produce later.

Why the rules are strict

The Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) is usually 30% of the course. For most programmes it is also an eligibility condition for the term-end exam. A bundle that the centre cannot identify, or a typed file they were told not to accept, does not get evaluated — and the grade card stays Not Completed.

How the answers must look

Handwriting
Your own hand, in your own words. Typed answers are rejected unless your programme has authorised them in writing.
Paper
A4, ruled or plain
Ink
Blue or black ball pen
Left margin
About 4 cm so the evaluator can comment
Cover page
One per course, filled before the answers

Write the question number clearly. Attach the question paper after the cover page if your centre asks for it. Do not staple three courses into one folder.

Where to submit

Submit once, at the study centre printed on your ID card. Handing the same assignment to a second centre creates duplicate records and delays marks. Online submission exists only where your regional centre has opened a portal for that cycle — follow that centre’s notice, not a WhatsApp forward.

  1. Step 1: On paper, at the centre

One file or folder per course. Ask for a receipt and get it stamped or signed. Photocopy the assignment before you leave it.

  2. Step 2: Online, if your centre allows it

One PDF per course, cover page first, usually under 10 MB. Name it EnrolmentNumber-CourseCode.pdf unless the notice says otherwise.

Keep the receipt

If the assignment never appears on the grade card, the stamped receipt is the only proof you submitted. A screenshot of a WhatsApp chat with a coordinator is not a receipt.

Build the cover page first

Fill the fields once and download an A4 PDF for each course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I type the assignment in Word and print it?
Not for most ODL theory courses. The answers must be handwritten. The cover page may be printed.
Can a friend submit it for me?
Some centres accept a representative with your ID card copy. Ask your coordinator first — many will not.
What if I already submitted and the status is blank?
Wait 30 to 45 days, then take the receipt to the coordinator. Check the enrolment number on the cover page before you assume the file was lost.
