Before exam day
The week before the exam is for preparation, not panic. Here is what to sort out before exam day:
- Download your hall ticket from the IGNOU website at least one week before the exam.
- Verify your name, enrolment number, course code, exam date, and exam centre on the hall ticket.
- Locate your exam centre on a map and estimate travel time. Plan to leave home early.
- Check the exam notification for any special instructions (e.g., reporting time, seating arrangement method).
- If your hall ticket has errors (wrong name, course, or centre), contact the IGNOU helpline immediately.
What to carry
Pack these items the night before the exam to avoid last-minute rush:
- Hall ticket
- Printed original copy. Digital copies may not be accepted — always carry a printout.
- ID card
- Original IGNOU ID card or any valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, passport).
- Writing materials
- Blue or black ballpoint pens (at least 2), pencil, eraser.
- Calculator
- Non-programmable calculator if your course permits it. Check the exam notification.
- Water bottle
- A clear bottle with a transparent label. Some centres are strict about branded bottles.
- No electronics
- Leave mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, and USB drives at home. These are confiscated if found.
Exam hall rules
Once you enter the exam hall, follow these rules to avoid any issues:
- Show your hall ticket and ID card to the invigilator at the entrance.
- Find your seat using the seating chart posted outside or inside the hall.
- Do not talk to other candidates once inside the hall.
- Do not carry any bags, books, or notes inside the hall.
- Sign the attendance sheet when the invigilator asks you to.
- Raise your hand if you need extra answer sheets, a calculator replacement, or have any question about the paper.
During the exam: time management and how to attempt questions
How you attempt the paper matters as much as what you know. Here is a proven strategy:
Step 1: Read the entire paper first (10 minutes)
Use the reading time to scan all questions. Mark the ones you know well and the ones that need more thought. This prevents panic later.
Step 2: Start with questions you know best
Answer the questions you are most confident about first. This builds momentum and ensures you secure those marks.
Step 3: Allocate time per section
Divide the 3 hours based on the marks distribution. For example, if Section A (objective) is 15 marks and Section D (essay) is 20 marks, allocate roughly 20 minutes for A and 50 minutes for D.
Step 4: Write structured answers
For descriptive questions: start with a brief introduction, list your main points with headings or bullet points, explain each point with examples, and end with a short conclusion.
Step 5: Attempt every question
Even if you only know a little about a topic, write something. IGNOU examiners award partial marks for relevant content. A blank answer gets zero; a partial answer can get some marks.
Step 6: Leave time to review
Reserve the last 15-20 minutes to review your answers, fill in any missing details, and make sure you have written your enrolment number on every page.
After the exam
Once you submit your answer sheet, here is what to do next:
- Hand over your answer sheet to the invigilator and confirm they have received it.
- Do not discuss the paper with other candidates outside the hall. This only creates anxiety.
- Collect your belongings and leave the centre calmly.
- If you feel you did poorly, remember that you can always reappear in the next session.
- Check the IGNOU results portal 6-8 weeks after the exam to see your marks.
- If you plan to appear for another exam, start preparing early rather than waiting for the result.
