Exam format
IGNOU term-end exams (TEE) are primarily written exams with both descriptive and objective-type questions. The exact format varies slightly by course, but most theory papers follow this general structure:
- Objective questions
- Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) or fill-in-the-blanks. Usually 10-20 marks. Common in BCA, BBA, and MCA courses.
- Descriptive questions
- Short answer questions worth 5-10 marks each. Require 200-500 words with clear points.
- Essay questions
- Long answer questions worth 15-20 marks each. Require detailed explanations, diagrams, and conclusions.
- Total marks on paper
- Most papers are printed for 70 marks. Some courses may have 100-mark papers.
- Exam duration
- 3 hours for most theory exams.
Marking scheme
IGNOU uses a step marking system where each correct point in your answer earns you marks. Understanding this helps you write answers that maximise your score.
- Each point in a descriptive answer typically earns 1 mark, provided it is relevant and correctly explained.
- Diagrams, flowcharts, and examples are awarded extra marks where applicable.
- For essay questions, the introduction, main body, and conclusion are all marked separately.
- Incorrect information or irrelevant content may result in negative marking in some courses (check your specific course guidelines).
- Writing the correct answer in your own words is preferred over verbatim textbook copying.
The total marks from the term-end exam (out of 70) are combined with your assignment marks (out of 100) using a weighted formula: 30% from assignments and 70% from the exam.
Duration and seating
- Exam duration
- 3 hours for most theory exams. Some practical exams may have different durations.
- Reporting time
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before the exam starts. Late arrivals may not be allowed inside after the first hour.
- Seating arrangement
- Posted outside the exam hall. Find your seat by matching your enrolment number or roll number.
- Reading time
- IGNOU typically provides 15 minutes of reading time before you can start writing.
Calculator policy
Whether you can use a calculator depends on the course. Here is the general policy:
- Non-programmable calculator
- Allowed for most numerical courses (e.g., mathematics, statistics, accountancy, BCA maths).
- Programmable calculator
- Not permitted under any circumstances.
- Scientific calculator
- Allowed for courses requiring advanced calculations. Check your course guidelines.
- No calculator
- Courses like history, sociology, political science, and English do not require calculators.
What to carry to the exam hall
Being prepared with the right items prevents unnecessary stress on exam day.
- Original hall ticket (downloaded from the IGNOU portal) — a printed copy.
- Original IGNOU ID card or any valid government-issued photo ID.
- Blue or black ballpoint pen — bring at least two as backup.
- Pencil and eraser (for filling in details on the answer sheet).
- Non-programmable calculator if your course allows it.
- A clear water bottle (without any labels that could look suspicious).
- No electronic devices — mobile phones, smartwatches, and earphones are strictly prohibited.
