Where the word limit comes from

The limit is printed on the assignment question paper, usually as “Answer in about 500 words”. Evaluators treat that as a band, not a hard ceiling, but a 200-word answer to a 500-word question looks thin, and a 2,000-word dump looks like padding.

Frequently asked questions

Does IGNOU reject answers that miss the word limit?
There is no automatic rejection for being a little over or under. Marks suffer when the answer is obviously too short to cover the question, or so long that it repeats itself.
Are hyphenated words counted as one?
This counter treats letters and digits separated by spaces as words. Hyphenated compounds usually count as one word.
