Assignments

IGNOU assignment format

The cover page identifies you. The pages after it are what the evaluator marks. Layout mistakes do not get you extra marks — they get the bundle rejected at the counter.

Paper
A4. Ruled is easier for handwriting. Plain is accepted.
Ink
Blue or black ball pen. Gel pens smear in scans.
Left margin
About 4 cm. Evaluators write there. A full-bleed page looks like you have something to hide.
Handwriting
Your own. Typed theory answers are rejected unless your programme has written permission.
Language
The language printed on that question paper. Do not mix Hindi and English in one answer unless the paper allows it.

The printed cover page may be typed. The answers may not. That split is the rule most ODL theory courses still use.

Fill enrolment, programme, course and centre once. Download an A4 PDF per course.

How to structure each answer

  • Write the question number first, exactly as on the paper (1, 2(a), 5.3).
  • Copy the question in brief only if your centre asks. Many do not. Marks go to the answer.
  • Stay inside the word limit printed on that question. A 250-word item that runs to four pages is not extra credit.
  • Leave a blank line between answers. Do not start a new question in the last two lines of a page if you can avoid it.
  • Number the sheets in one sequence after the cover. If the scan shuffles, the evaluator stops.

Count the words before you photograph

Paste a draft or a typed transcript of what you wrote. The counter does not upload anything.

A bundle that a coordinator can identify in ten seconds

1Cover / front page with enrolment, course, centre, mobile, email, signature

3Assignment question paper (if that centre’s notice asks)

One course, one file. Do not staple MEG-01, MEG-02 and MEG-03 into a single folder. Online: name the PDF EnrolmentNumber-CourseCode.pdf unless the portal says otherwise.

Merge cover + ID + answers

What this format is not

  • It is not a licence to submit a photocopied “solved assignment” booklet. Those get you zero and can get you debarred.
  • It is not the project or synopsis format. Dissertations have a different cover and a different evaluator.
  • It is not a substitute for your regional centre’s circular. If Delhi-1 and your RC disagree, your RC wins for your bundle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write on both sides of the sheet?
Yes, unless your centre’s notice forbids it. Scans of both sides must stay in order. Thin paper shows through — use a thicker A4 if you write on the back.
Is an index or contents page required?
Not for a standard TMA. Number the questions. An extra contents page does not replace a missing enrolment number on the cover.
What if the question paper has no word limit?
Write enough to answer the question, not a chapter. For a 20-mark essay, a few well-structured pages beat fifteen pages of padding.
